## How Pinterest keyword research works

Keyword research on Pinterest answers two questions: how many people search for a phrase, and how hard it is to rank for it. Volume tells you demand. The pins already ranking for the phrase tell you competition: search it on Pinterest and look at what comes up. Years-old pins with huge save counts mean a hard keyword; recent pins with modest saves mean an open one.

Most of the work is knowing which number you are looking at. Pinterest does not show a search count next to your search, so every tool shows one of a few sources, and the guides below say which.

## Which guide to read first

- [Best Pinterest keyword research tools](https://insightpins.com/blog/best-pinterest-keyword-research-tools.html): start here if you are choosing a tool. It compares free and paid tools by the kind of number each one shows, with prices and a five-step research workflow.
- [Pinterest Predicts keyword watchlist](https://insightpins.com/blog/pinterest-predicts-keyword-watchlist.html): turn a trend report into a shortlist of phrases you have actually checked, each with a dated observation and a next action.
- [Pinterest keyword search volume API](https://insightpins.com/blog/get-pinterest-keyword-volume.html): for developers who want volumes in code, from the API v5 keyword metrics, suggested terms and trending keywords endpoints.

## Free ways to check a keyword

The [free Pinterest keyword tool](https://insightpins.com/free-pinterest-keyword-tool.html) looks up a keyword's monthly Pinterest search volume along with related and long-tail ideas: 2 lookups a day, no signup. The [Pinterest board name generator](https://insightpins.com/tools/pinterest-board-name-generator.html) suggests board names people search for on a topic, with monthly search volumes for the top names. For a full map of related and long-tail keywords with their volumes, [Keyword Explorer](https://insightpins.com/keyword-explorer.html) does the same inside the Pin Stats extension on the Extended Pro plan.

## Questions about Pinterest keyword research

### Does Pinterest show keyword search volume?

Not next to your search. Pinterest publishes monthly counts for interest topics, shows ranges in Ads Manager and a relative 0 to 100 index in Pinterest Trends. A keyword tool is only as useful as the source it draws on, so check which of these it shows.

### When should I use Pinterest Trends?

To time seasonal pins, weeks before a curve starts rising. Each Trends line is scaled to its own peak, so it cannot tell you which of two keywords is bigger. Use a monthly count for that.

### Is a phrase in Pinterest Predicts proof of demand?

No. A sample search printed in a trend report is a reason to investigate, not a measurement. Check its volume for the market you publish in before you plan content around it.
